Somehow Things Do Not Relate: On the Interpretation of Polyadic Second-Order Logic

چکیده

Second-order logic, it has been alleged by W. V. Quine [17], is nothing but set theory in disguise, and hence not logic proper. The second-order quantifiers, so the allegation goes, have to range over some kind of “higher” entity or universal: properties or attributes at worst; sets at best, as sets at least are extensional. Moreover, a set-theoretic understanding may allow us to appreciate that second-order logic is consistent.1 But then second-order logic is ontologically committed to sets, although this commitment is cunningly hidden in the guise of quantification into predicate position. Operative here is Quine’s criterion of ontological commitment: to be is to be the value of a (bound) variable (see, e.g., Quine [16]). George Boolos, [1] and [2], has argued that this need not be so. While Boolos gives little reason to believe that he is particularly concerned about the boundary between logic proper and mathematics, he nevertheless finds it important to establish that the second-order quantifiers do not range over sets. Consider the case of second-order set theory. The statement

Guards, Bounds, and Generalized Semantics

Some initial motivations for the Guarded Fragment still seem of interest in carrying its program further. First, we stress the equivalence between two perspectives: (a) satisfiability on standard models for guarded first-order formulas, and (b) satisfiability on general assignment models for arbitrary firstorder formulas. In particular, we give a new straightforward reduction from the former no...

Simulating polyadic modal logics by monadic ones

We define an interpretation of modal languages with polyadic operators in modal languages that use monadic operators (diamonds) only. We also define a simulation operator which associates a logic Λ in the diamond language with each logic Λ in the language with polyadic modal connectives. We prove that this simulation operator transfers several useful properties of modal logics, such as finite/r...

Extensionalizing Intensional Second-Order Logic

Neo-Fregean approaches to set theory, following Frege, have it that sets are the extensions of concepts, where concepts are the values of second-order variables. e idea is that, given a second-order entity X, there may be an object εX, which is the extension of X. Other writers have also claimed a similar relationship between second-order logic and set theory, where sets arise from pluralities....

On Neat Embeddings of Algebraisations of First Order Logic

Let α be an infinite ordinal. There are non-isomorphic representable algebras of dimension α each of which is a generating subreduct of the same β dimensional algebra. Dually there exists a representable algebra A of dimension , α such that A is a generating subreduct of B and , B′ however, B and B′ are not isomorphic. The above was proven to hold for infinite dimensional cylindric algebras (CA...
